Curtains to me are like icing on a cake. They help set the mood in a room. They can make the room appear bright or dark, warm or cold, serene or busy. Done right, they even have the power to make ceiling heights taller and windows bigger. Here are some practical tips on how to maximize the benefits of curtains.

1. DO hang them high and wide. Looking at the picture below this simple trick can make the ceiling appear taller and windows bigger.

2. DON'T go short. The midriffs may be back in style but it doesn't look good on your window. Let them kiss the ground if you want to achieve a romantic feel. If not, hemming them just before they hit the ground is a great idea. If your sewing skills are at zero, you can buy the hemming strip that sticks fabric together using a flat iron. IKEA use to include them in all their curtains until they've gotten cheap. Not to worry, you can find the same at your nearest dollar store or Walmart.

3. DO use enough fabric. If you want to be able to close the curtains occasionally, the width of your curtains must be at least double the size of your actual window.

4. DO choose the right fabric. Tons of different options, the fabric should blend in with the rest of the room. I don't think using a heavy velvet fabric is right for the beach house. I'm sure you get the concept.

5. DO get creative. You can use curtains to divide a room or conceal the not too pleasing sight in the house.

6. DON'T go crazy. I know there's thousands of different options out there but please when in doubt, seek the help of a professional.
